Upside Engineering is a diverse set of people who believe in making the process serve us rather than the other way around. We are excited about technology and the impact we can have. While our day to day work is dedicated to delivering business value in small teams we also like to build guilds of common interest across teams to foster learning and idea sharing and implementation of best practices. Our current organization is made up of four “hives”, Consumer, Merchant, Marketplace, and Platform. Our Consumer and Merchant tribes represent a primary stakeholder be it our day to day app users or the businesses we seek to empower and become successful. Our marketplace and platform teams support the internal engineering teams with generalized product features or development tooling or whatever else they may need to deliver software with security, observability, and scalability as primary concerns.
About the job:
The Staff Software Engineer will design and ship software in a collaborative team environment. This is an individual leadership role that will build partnerships, iterate quickly in response to business needs, and communicate effectively.
What you’ll do:
- Work on a team of up to 7-8 engineers + a product manager + designer on our larger projects and sometimes individually on smaller, bite-sized improvements
- Ship software with high quality, being mindful of maintainability, testability, security, performance, and monitoring
- Build out new functionality to facilitate payments processing that integrates with our existing software ecosystem
- Occasionally lead projects from ‘design to done’
- Collaborate with the team to improve process through agile methodologies
- Monitor and support live systems in a rotation with the rest of your team
What you need:
- 10+ years of software engineering within a collaborative and agile environment
- Expertise in Python or Java and deep knowledge of AWS and distributed systems
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering or equivalent experience
- Willingness to learn, adapt, fail and grow (professional growth mindset)
- Ability to design, document, and communicate technical architecture
