The Role

The Product Development Engineer I plays a crucial role in the development and innovation of The Honest Company's product line. This position is responsible for supporting the entire product development lifecycle, from initial prototyping and testing to specification management and commercialization. Working under the guidance of Senior Engineers, the Product Development Engineer I will contribute to research and development efforts aimed at delivering a robust pipeline of new items, product improvements, sustainable enhancements, process development designs, technology initiatives, and margin enhancements. This role involves hands-on technical testing, supplier collaboration, scientific analysis, and detailed documentation, ensuring the successful development and launch of high-quality, consumer-focused products. The ideal candidate will possess a strong foundation in engineering principles, a keen interest in innovation, and a commitment to supporting The Honest Company's business objectives.

What You'll Do:

  • Technical Testing and Validation: Coordinate and execute technical testing of softgoods materials and products. Test and validate new designs in collaboration with Contract Manufacturers (CMs).
  • Supplier Collaboration: Participate in supplier meetings and track/coordinate technical development tasks and milestones.
  • Product Development Support: Assist in the design, development, and launch of consumer goods. Provide project execution to ensure successful transition to commercialization and launch.
  • Market and Regulatory Awareness: Maintain knowledge of market demands, user needs, and regulatory requirements specific to the consumer products industry.
  • Scientific Analysis: Utilize scientific principles including statistical analysis, Design of Experiments (DOE), problem-solving, and root cause analysis.
  • Senior Engineer Support: Support Senior Engineers in executing product innovation aligned with strategic business plans and goals.
  • Innovation and Problem Solving: Employ innovative approaches based on available scientific knowledge to projects.
  • Documentation and Reporting: Coordinate and document knowledge, and report R&D work for each project. Summarize data and present findings for analysis and recommendations.
  • Intellectual Property Support: Support the protection of technologies, processes, materials, and products via appropriate use of patents and trade secrets.
  • Industry Trend Monitoring: Stay updated on industry trends and competitor products, using insights to guide product engineering decisions.

What You'll Bring:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field

  • 1–3 years of experience in product development, ideally in consumer goods or softgoods

  • Hands-on experience with materials testing, validation, and analysis

  • Familiarity with statistical tools, root cause analysis, and Design of Experiments (DOE)

  • Strong collaboration skills with suppliers and cross-functional teams

  • Clear and organized communicator with strong documentation abilities

  • Curiosity and drive for innovation and continuous improvement

  • Awareness of market trends, user needs, and regulatory considerations

Compensation

The pay range for this role is $78,400 - $107,700. Actual compensation is based on many factors including but not limited to depth of experience, skill level, ability, knowledge, education, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.

The total rewards package for this position may also include base, annual incentive plan, benefits, retirement plan, equity, and Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
