Role:
As Controller at Sword, you will build and lead the global accounting foundation that enables the leading AI Health company in the world to operate with confidence and discipline while preparing Sword for public-company rigor. You will own the accuracy of our financial reporting, the strength of our internal controls, and the successful delivery of our external audits. This is a highly visible role partnering closely with the Finance leader, Audit Committee, and senior leadership across the business. You will be both a strategist and a builder: leading a talented but junior team, improving systems and processes, and shaping a world-class finance organization as we expand across the US and Europe. Team:
The Finance Team at Sword plays a critical role in maintaining the company's financial health and sustainability as we strive to provide excellent healthcare solutions. Our team manages financial planning, analysis, and reporting, as well as accounting, revenue operations, and procurement. By optimizing resource allocation, ensuring compliance, and driving efficient revenue operations, we offer strategic insights that enable informed decision-making and support Sword's continued growth and impact.
We collaborate closely with all teams, providing the financial support needed to drive innovation and achieve organizational goals, while ensuring responsible financial practices and compliance.
What you’ll be doing:
Global Accounting & Controls Leadership:
◦ Owns US GAAP-compliant accounting, revenue recognition (ASC 606), and multi-entity consolidation (US+Europe).
◦ Manage month-end close, GL integrity, intercompany transactions, and financial reporting accuracy.
◦ Maintain internal controls and policies required for future public-company readiness; coordinate closely with InfoSec, IT, and Legal.
◦ Prepare and lead annual external audits; manage relationship with external auditors.
◦ Ensure compliance with health-care related financial regulations (SOC2, HIPAA-related processes, etc.).
◦ Prepare global financial statements and management reporting, partnering with FP&A to drive insights.
◦ Present reporting and control environment updates to Audit Committee.
◦ Support technical accounting research and implementation of new standards.
Revenue & Cost Governance:
◦ Track performance and margins across multiple revenue streams and commercial models.
◦ Partner with Commercial and Revenue Operations to strengthen systems data integrity (CRM, Billing tool, Contract Data) and ensure accuracy of our utilization-based revenue model.
Tax Compliance:
◦ Manage US and international tax compliance (VAT, sales tax, income tax).
◦ Oversee R&D tax credit processes and documentation.
◦ Drive automation and efficiency in tax data collection and filing.
Process & System Scaling:
◦ Design and improve scalable accounting workflows across AP, AR, payroll, and spend approval.
◦ Deploy and optimize financial systems (ERP, spend management, travel).
◦ Lead automation to reduce manual work and shorten time-to-close.
Team Leadership:
◦ Lead and coach a geographically distributed Accounting team (US + Europe).
◦ Build capabilities and uplift developing talent; recruit where needed.
Strategic Transactions:
◦ Ensure accurate accounting for equity transactions, debt financing and fundraising events.
◦ Support corporate structuring and M&A integration activities when needed (including, Financial DD, Tax DD, PPA).
What you need to have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting/Finance; CPA or equivalent strongly preferred.
- 10+ years progressive accounting experience with at least 3 years leading teams.
- Experience at a rapidly scaling startup/scale-up.
- Strong technical accounting background (US GAAP, ASC 606, multi-country consolidation).
- Proven success leading financial audits and implementing internal controls.
- Experience from a public accounting firm is a plus.
- Hands-on experience across AP, AR, payroll, revenue operations, tax, and reporting (including complex intercompany setups).
- Experience operating across multiple countries/entities (US + European countries preferred).
- Demonstrated success improving systems, processes, and close timelines.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic high-growth environment with evolving priorities.
- IPO or SOX readiness involvement.
