Substack is building a new economic engine for culture, giving the brightest, most interesting, and most creative people on the internet the power of their own publishing platform. Substack empowers independent writers, artists, videographers, podcasters, and creators of all types to create, share, and make a living off their work through subscriptions, while offering them creative freedom, ownership, and a direct connection to their audiences.
As Substack's Communications Manager, Product & Community, you will move fluidly across product storytelling, creator community engagement, and brand work, bringing sharp instincts and strong execution to wherever the team needs you most.
This role is ideal for someone energized by variety and comfortable with a scope that evolves as the team grows. If you thrive in fast-moving environments, write with clarity and purpose, are comfortable representing the brand externally as a spokesperson when needed, and care deeply about what independent creators are building, we’d love to meet you. This position will join the Communications team and report directly to the Communications Lead.
Core responsibilities:
Partner with engineering, partnerships, and product marketing to bring launches and product updates to life through clear, integrated storytelling — including blog posts, press materials, briefings, FAQs, pitch assets, and targeted emails.
Work with creators to coordinate beta testing, gather testimonials, and highlight compelling examples of how writers and creators are building on Substack.
Produce and occasionally host external educational programming, including creator Q&As and masterclasses, in collaboration with our education producer, while leading internal cross-team standups.
Support brand initiatives and special projects, including announcements, partnerships, and cultural moments across earned, social, and editorial channels.
Serve as a public-facing representative of Substack on Notes, engaging with creator and subscriber conversations, responding to questions, and surfacing feedback to product, support, and other internal teams.
Maintain internal trackers for launches, updates, and press opportunities, and help triage incoming press inquiries and communications requests with speed and good judgment.
About You:
4-6 years of experience in communications.
An exceptional writer who can translate complex, technical ideas into clear, engaging narratives for a range of audiences.
A generalist at heart. You're as comfortable crafting a product launch post as you are jumping into a creator Q&A, going on-camera to present a masterclass, or supporting an internal workflow.
Comfortable with ambiguity and energized by a scope that may evolve over time.
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple workstreams without letting things slip.
Experience working cross-functionally with product, partnerships, or community teams.
Resourceful and self-directed. You find your footing quickly and don't wait to be told what to do next. You have a high sense of initiative and urgency.
Curious about culture, media, and the creator economy, and excited about helping independent creators succeed.
Willing to collaborate with any writer or creator on the platform regardless of their views.
Based in New York City or San Francisco.
Substack’s compensation package includes a market-competitive salary, equity for all full-time roles, and exceptional benefits. Our cash compensation salary range for this role is $115,000-$130,000. Multiple factors, including candidate experience and expertise, determine final offer amounts and may vary from the amounts listed above.
Substack is an equal opportunity employer. All applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy, sexual orientation, gender identity or transgender status), age, national origin, veteran or disability status. We’re seeking people passionate about enabling independent expression and building a better business model for creators. If you want to see what media, communities, and content can become when unmoored from advertising models, and you have the skills and experience to contribute, we’d love to meet you.
