About Sage Care

Sage Care is a fast-growing, early-stage healthcare startup founded by exceptional leaders from Apple, Uber, Carbon Health and backed by top-tier venture capital (General Catalyst, Chelsea Clinton). With a strong customer pipeline, Sage Care is transforming healthcare by simplifying care navigation.

Our platform makes it easier for patients to find the right doctor, helps providers focus on those who need them most, and ensures faster access to care, delivering better care and stronger economic outcomes at scale through harnessing the latest AI innovations.

Building on our successful collaborations with health systems across the U.S., we have expanded internationally to the MENA region. We are now partnering with health systems there to deploy our AI-powered care navigation platform.

About the Role

We’re hiring a backend engineer to build the systems that make Sage Care’s real-time AI agents fast, reliable, and secure. You’ll own core backend services and shared platform capabilities that help our engineers build and launch new patient workflows.

We’re looking for someone who has built demanding real-time systems, takes projects from architecture through production, and uses AI coding agents expertly to accelerate development without compromising engineering quality.

We welcome senior and staff-level engineers. Prior Rust or experience building AI products is helpful but not required.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build backend systems for real-time agent execution, session state, service orchestration, and integrations.

  • Build shared capabilities for authentication, authorization, and isolation across healthcare partners, working with infrastructure and security.

  • Improve latency, throughput, and resilience under load, and resolve failures across services and external dependencies.

  • Create APIs and abstractions that let product and AI engineers build reliably on the platform.

  • Use AI coding agents to accelerate implementation, testing, debugging, and refactoring, and help the team adopt effective practices.

  • Own production quality through load testing, observability, incident investigation, and safe rollouts.

What We’re Looking For

Required

  • 5+ years of software engineering experience, including building and operating high-load, latency-sensitive backend systems.

  • Deep understanding of concurrency, asynchronous execution, networking, and distributed systems.

  • A track record of owning substantial technical projects, making architectural decisions, and delivering reliable systems into production.

  • Strong judgment in designing secure services, clear interfaces, and reusable platform capabilities.

  • Advanced practical experience with AI coding agents, with examples of shipping complex software faster and validating its correctness.

  • Ability to diagnose difficult production problems and keep solutions simple as systems grow.

Nice to Have

  • Production Rust experience.

  • Experience with voice, streaming, agent runtimes, or model serving.
