About the Role
At Rossum, we use world-class machine learning and intuitive UI to eliminate useless paperwork and make the world go faster. Our AI Research Team builds proprietary, state-of-the-art neural architectures that power Rossum’s production systems, processing millions of documents every week for customers worldwide.
We are looking for a Senior AI Research Engineer to join our AI Research Team (R&D). In this role, you’ll push the boundaries of document understanding - training advanced models from the ground up and building research prototypes and solutions that directly shape our product capabilities.
You will operate at the crossroads of cutting-edge global research and Rossum’s in-house model development, directly influencing our long-term model strategy and technical roadmap as successful ideas rapidly roll into systems used by customers at scale.
You’ll join a team of experienced researchers and engineers, tightly coupled with Product and AI Platform Teams, working in a shared monorepo to ensure fast experimentation, continuous delivery, and real customer impact.
What You'll Do
You will be a key driver of Rossum’s document understanding strategy, owning end-to-end research initiatives while shaping the long-term evolution of our models and platforms.
Key responsibilities include:
Lead research initiatives across deep learning, NLP, computer vision, and multimodal systems — operating at the intersection of global research and in-house innovation to turn promising ideas into Rossum’s proprietary, production-ready models.
Design and run bold experiments with a hacker mindset, rapidly prototyping while considering deployment trade-offs to deliver impact into real products — optimizing for inference cost, latency, robustness, and reliability.
Own large-scale NLP and vision training systems, including architecture design, distributed training, in-house benchmarks, aligning key metrics with product requirements.
Leverage top-tier research infrastructure, including clusters of high-end GPUs and large-memory machines, to run ambitious experiments at real-world scale.
Shape Rossum’s technical roadmap by identifying high-impact research directions and driving them from concept to customer impact.
Mentor and influence others by guiding junior researchers and leading cross-team technical discussions while documenting insights and best practices.
Who You Are
We’re looking for a seasoned researcher who brings:
5+ years of experience in applied ML research, ML engineering, or deep learning–driven product development.
Strong Python skills and hands-on experience with frameworks such as PyTorch or TensorFlow.
Scientific rigor and strategic execution, with the ability to design strong experiments and turn research ideas into scalable, production-grade systems.
Deep insight into training NLP and vision models, including architecture design, large-scale experimentation, and deployment trade-offs.
Ownership and curiosity, staying close to global research while driving in-house innovation end to end.

Within 3 months:
You’ve ramped up on Rossum’s research stack and data pipelines, built strong relationships with the AI Platform and Product teams, and shipped your first meaningful improvement to a production model or evaluation framework.Within 6 months:
You’re leading multiple research efforts end to end — running well-designed experiments, improving training efficiency or reproducibility, and influencing which ideas move forward.Within 12 months:
You’ve delivered a major research initiative with measurable gains in accuracy, latency, or cost, and you’re helping define the next year’s research agenda and technical priorities.
