Team:

At Relativity, we re-imagine the way rockets are built and flown. The Materials and Processes Engineering Team plays a crucial role in this mission by evaluating and improving the materials that make our rockets. We are searching for a Materials Engineer, Non-Metallics who will serve as the technical lead for the entire Terran-R launch vehicle ecosystem.

What you’ll do:

  • Serve as the non-metallics technical lead for the entire materials and processes engineering team
  • Research, trade, and select conventional and novel non-metallic materials and processes for various structural, thermal, corrosion, and electrical applications
  • Identify qualification envelopes, form test plans, and execute characterization campaigns
  • Develop, implement, and maintain technical specifications and engineering standards
  • Drive statistically-driven experimental design and process improvement campaigns
  • Interface with:
    • Materials engineering staff to identify, define, and fill technology gaps
    • Chief technical engineers to support TPS material development campaigns
    • Laboratory staff to characterize materials and processes
    • Designers to support materials selection, allowables development, and analysis
    • Manufacturing engineering to improve processes, troubleshoot issues and facilitate operations
    • Quality assurance to drive specification compliance and process audits
    • Product engineering to lead failure analyses and root cause and corrective action campaigns
    • Leadership to elevate risks and overcome roadblocks

What you need to know:

  • Bachelor’s degree in materials science or engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience relevant to the competencies listed below
  • A strong commitment to accountability, collaboration, and execution
  • A desire to establish and foster strong interdisciplinary relationships across the company
  • An authentic, introspective, and inclusive mindset towards technical, interpersonal, and team growth and development

Nice to haves but not required:

  • Experience with the following non-metallic materials and processes:
    • Epoxy, urethane, and silicone adhesives and sealants
    • Corks, foams, ceramics, and related thermal protection materials
    • Primers, paints, and coatings for corrosion, thermal, and electrical applications
    • Potting, staking, and conformal coats
    • Elastomeric gaskets and seals
    • Polymer-based material systems for non-structural applications
    • Dry film lubricants and greases
  • Understanding of cryogenic and high temperature non-metallic material behavior
  • Experience with non-metallic testing standards and procedures
  • Familiarity with contamination control and outgassing principles
  • Expertise in statistical experimental design and process control
