Environmental Olfactometry Specialist

Location: Stillwater, MN

Work Setting: Onsite

Salary: $33.65–$50.48/hr.

Schedule: Full-time, typically 9:00 AM–5:00 PM

About the Role

A growing environmental testing and consulting organization is looking for an Environmental Olfactometry Specialist to take ownership of its environmental olfactometry operations.

This is a highly technical position that combines environmental science, air quality, odor assessment, sensory science, laboratory testing, data analysis and client communication.

You will manage the day-to-day process for environmental samples, work closely with the laboratory team, ensure testing follows established standards and help clients understand their results.

What You’ll Do

  • Oversee daily environmental olfactometry laboratory operations.
  • Conduct and support dynamic dilution olfactometry testing.
  • Prepare odor samples and calibrate testing equipment.
  • Analyze odor thresholds, intensity and characterization data.
  • Plan and oversee sensory panel testing.
  • Monitor testing consistency and assessor performance.
  • Maintain ASTM, CEN, ISO and QA/QC requirements.
  • Support ISO 17025 laboratory practices and audits.
  • Troubleshoot equipment, testing and data inconsistencies.
  • Review environmental testing protocols.
  • Communicate directly with clients regarding samples, results and chain-of-custody questions.
  • Explain technical reports and findings in a clear, client-friendly manner.
  • Serve as a technical/account lead for environmental clients.
  • Support R&D involving odor and sensory testing methods.

What We’re Looking For

  • Approximately 5+ years of experience in air quality, environmental consulting, environmental monitoring, odor assessment, sensory science or a related technical field.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Sensory Science or a related discipline.
  • Strong analytical and technical skills.
  • Experience with environmental sampling, air quality, odor assessment or sensory testing.
  • Ability to understand and interpret technical data.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Comfortable working independently and making decisions.
  • Professional, mature and solution-oriented when unexpected issues arise.

Olfactometry experience is highly valued, but it is not the only path into the role. Strong environmental/air-quality professionals and sensory scientists with meaningful odor experience may also be a strong fit.

Why Join This Team

This is an opportunity to take ownership of a specialized technical function within a small, highly collaborative organization. You’ll have meaningful interaction with clients, direct influence over data quality and testing processes, and the opportunity to become deeply involved in a niche area of environmental and sensory science.

The role also offers long-term professional development, international networking opportunities and potential advancement into Lab Manager or Lab Director responsibilities.

Looking forward to your application!
