$130,000–$160,000+
Relocation Assistance Available
We are partnering with a growing structural engineering and consulting firm seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer / Project Lead to join its team in the South Bend area.
This is not a traditional, repetitive structural design position. The firm takes on technically challenging and often non-standard projects involving new construction, existing structures, retrofits, alternative materials, structural assessments, and specialized engineering problems that may fall outside typical prescriptive codes and standards.
What You'll Do
- Lead structural engineering projects from initial proposal through design and completion
- Take technical ownership of projects and sign/seal engineering work
- Perform structural analysis and design across steel, concrete, masonry, wood, composites, and alternative materials
- Work on both new construction and challenging retrofit/existing-building projects
- Manage approximately 6–10 active projects with varying scopes and complexity
- Coordinate directly with clients and gradually take ownership of key client relationships
- Mentor and provide technical direction to junior engineers
- Review calculations, drawings, reports, and technical deliverables
- Help solve unusual structural problems that may require engineering judgment beyond standard code-based solutions
- Participate in technical reports, proposals, research, standards/code development, and other R&D-oriented initiatives based on interest
- Identify opportunities to improve engineering processes, tools, and technical approaches
What We're Looking For
- 6+ years of structural engineering/design experience
- Active Professional Engineer (PE) license required
- Strong background in structural analysis and design
- Experience independently leading structural projects
- Ability and willingness to sign and seal engineering work
- Experience taking projects from proposal/design through completion
- Ability to communicate directly with clients and other project stakeholders
- Experience mentoring or providing technical guidance to junior engineers
- Strong understanding of structural behavior rather than dependence on a specific software platform
- Comfortable working across multiple materials, structural systems, and project types
Strong Plus
- 10–15+ years of structural engineering experience
- Structural Engineer (SE) license
- NCEES Record
- Master's degree or PhD in Structural or Civil Engineering
- Existing-building or historical retrofit experience
- Masonry design experience
- FRP, composites, or alternative-material experience
- Experience with unusual or non-standard structural systems
- Research, testing, standards/code development, or technical writing experience
- Interest in client development or business development
Technology
The team currently utilizes tools including SAP2000, RAM, and proprietary engineering software, but specific software experience is not a requirement. The firm values engineers who understand structural behavior and can adapt to the right tool for the problem.
Schedule & Flexibility
The preferred candidate will initially work from the Mishawaka / South Bend area office to develop strong relationships with the engineering team.
Hybrid flexibility may become available once established. For an exceptional senior-level candidate, fully remote arrangements may also be considered, provided the individual can work primarily Eastern Time hours and maintain appropriate PE licensure.
The team generally works approximately 40 hours per week and offers every other Friday off, creating regular three- and four-day weekends throughout the year.
Relocation assistance is available.
