HDD Operator/Foreman – Underground Utilities & Directional Drilling

Travel to project sites throughout the Midwest region - Wisconsin based

We’re working with a long-standing, family-owned underground utility contractor that has been in business for over 80 years and continues to grow across the Midwest. They’re looking to add an experienced HDD Operator / Foreman to support increasing project volume across underground utility and civil construction projects.

This is a hands-on field leadership role for someone who can confidently operate horizontal directional drills while also leading crews safely and efficiently on active job sites. Projects include underground utility installation, open trench work, high-voltage electric, gas, fiber optics, and HDD projects across multiple states.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Operate HDD equipment on active underground utility and civil construction projects
  • Serve as the on-site Foreman leading union field crews
  • Coordinate daily field activities, production, and safety execution
  • Work closely with project management and superintendents to keep projects moving
  • Complete daily reports, timecards, and production tracking
  • Ensure crews are working safely in high-risk environments including open trench and high-voltage utility work
  • Travel to project sites throughout the Midwest region

What They’re Looking For

  • Strong experience operating horizontal directional drills (HDD)
  • Foreman, lead operator, or crew leadership experience in the field
  • Background in underground utilities, civil construction, pipeline, telecom, gas, electric, or fiber work
  • Comfortable managing crews and handling field execution on active job sites
  • Experience working around open trench and underground utility environments
  • Stable work history with companies/projects seen through to completion
  • Union experience is a plus

Equipment Experience

Experience with HDD equipment such as:

  • Vermeer
  • American Augers
  • Similar directional drilling equipment

Travel & Schedule

  • Field-based role supporting projects across the Midwest
  • Typical projects range from 4–8 weeks in duration
  • Crews generally work 6 days/week during peak season
  • Hotel accommodations, travel support, and per diem provided based on project assignment and role structure
