Controller

A family-owned and operated, union-based construction services company with over two decades of proven success is seeking a well versed Controller/Accounting Manager. Our client is seeking a hands-on Controller who can run the accounting function as a one-person department, wearing many hats and leading with both high-level strategy and day-to-day execution for their $10 million operation. Key Responsibilities

  • Full-Cycle Accounting: Manage Accounts Receivable (A/R), Accounts Payable (A/P), and invoicing across small daily tickets to six-figure projects.
  • Payroll Coordination: Partner with external accountant for processing payroll; ensure accuracy and timely reporting.
  • Banking & Cash Flow: Oversee daily cash flow, fund transfers, and banking relationships.
  • Month-End Close: Handle reconciliations, journal entries, and monthly reporting.
  • Project Support: Manage lien releases, Certificates of Insurance (COIs), and compliance documentation.
  • Financial Leadership: Build structure around budgets, forecasting, and financial best practices (currently not formalized).
  • Operational Oversight: Support 20–30 concurrent jobs, ranging from half-day service calls to weeklong projects, with high transaction volumes.
  • Systems Management: Utilize Fleet Cost & Care (industry-specific software) and QuickBooks Online for billing, estimating, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Leadership Role: Function as the financial leader within the organization, advising ownership on business and operational decisions.

Qualifications

  • 5 to 10 years of full-cycle accounting experience
  • Strong working knowledge of construction industry practices and union environments.
  • Background in construction, job costing, lien processes, and industrial services required.
  • Capable of operating independently as a one-person accounting department, while serving as a strategic partner to ownership.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-moving, high-transaction environment with multiple projects and priorities.
