About Pacific Fusion

Pacific Fusion was founded in 2023 with the mission to power the world with abundant, affordable, clean energy.

We are rapidly designing and building a pulsed magnetic fusion system to achieve net facility gain (more fusion energy output than stored energy input). In parallel, we are developing the key components required to build affordable fusion systems.

Our plans are ambitious. We have raised over $900M so far from incredible investors, resourcing us to deliver on these plans. We are bringing together the best scientists, engineers, and operators from the fusion community, hard tech industry, and other sectors. We are united by a shared sense of urgency to provide clean power for the world, particularly managing climate change while meeting growing global energy demand. You can read more about us in this letter from our founders.

About the role
Pacific Fusion is seeking a highly skilled X-Ray Engineering Diagnostics Lead to lead the design, development, and implementation of advanced X-ray diagnostic systems for cutting-edge fusion energy technology. In this role, you will guide a dedicated team of engineers in creating diagnostics capable of operating in extreme environments while delivering precise data to our researchers. Your leadership will be critical in achieving design milestones and advancing the development of a fusion system that demonstrates net facility gain, complete with its own infrastructure and facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of engineers specializing in X-ray diagnostics, driving progress and ensuring alignment with project objectives.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, physicists, and researchers, to define system requirements and deliver optimal solutions.

  • Design and develop advanced X-ray diagnostic systems capable of withstanding the extreme conditions of a fusion chamber while maintaining precision in data acquisition.

  • Oversee the integration of sensors and diagnostics systems across the broader fusion system, ensuring compatibility and functionality.

  • Manage all phases of development, from initial concept to final implementation and testing.

  • Conduct rigorous testing and iterative design improvements to enhance system reliability and performance.

  • Develop comprehensive documentation and specifications to support the development and deployment process.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

  • Proven experience leading and managing technical teams, with a strong ability to foster collaboration, mentor team members, and drive results.

  • Extensive experience in the design, testing, and development of X-ray diagnostics or similar systems.

  • Strong background in working with sensors, instrumentation, and diagnostic measurement tools.

  • Demonstrated expertise in mechanical design with a focus on practical, cost-effective solutions and manufacturability.

  • Hands-on experience in rapid prototyping, testing, and problem-solving in laboratory or field settings.

  • Proficiency in CAD software, such as Creo or NX CAD, with a solid understanding of design for manufacturability (DFM).

  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts to diverse teams.

Benefits:

  • Industry-competitive salary

  • Equity plan

  • 6% employer 401k matching

  • Generous paid time off (including sick leave, vacation, paid family leave)

  • Medical, Dental, and Vision insurance
