Who we are:

Nirvana is on a mission to harness the power of data to revolutionize commercial insurance and enable a safer world. We are bringing much-needed innovation into the legacy, trillion-dollar commercial insurance industry. We have developed cutting-edge predictive models that use real-time IoT data from billions of connected devices, allowing us to better understand and price risk. Our AI-driven platform fundamentally changes the way an insurance company operates with personalized risk scoring, faster underwriting, modernized claims, and proactive, data-driven insights to help customers prevent accidents.

We’ve already proven the scale—reaching well over $100 million in premiums and more than doubling year over year. Our data moat is growing exponentially with more than 20 billion miles of telematics data, leading to more predictive models and new insights into how we can better understand and reduce risk. Altogether, our loss ratio, efficiency, and customer experience are redefining what can be done in the industry.

With $170+ million raised, including an industry-leading Series C round in January 2025, we’re only accelerating our growth, with strong support from top-tier VCs including Lightspeed, General Catalyst, and Valor. Nirvana’s leadership team has previously helped scale multi-billion-dollar companies from scratch, including Samsara, Rubrik, and Flexport, and includes industry veterans from Hiscox, The Hartford, and RLI.

About the role:

The Nirvana engineering team works in close collaboration with our product and business teams to solve customer problems. As software engineers, we take pride in our craft and build for the long term while understanding that software is best built in a team setting.

Our stack primarily includes Golang, React, and Typescript, but here's the exciting part: don't worry if you're not familiar with Golang! We value enthusiasm, a passion for learning, and teamwork, so your willingness to grow with us is what truly matters.

Our team follows best-in-class software engineering practices and utilizes state-of-the-art open source tools to achieve our goals. It's not just about the languages you know; it's about the potential and dedication you bring to the table!

As a software engineering intern at Nirvana, you will work alongside a global team to develop innovative solutions in areas such as data-driven safety, customer experience, and insurance pricing. You might help build scalable data platforms, enhance AI-powered applications for claims and billing, or support the development of proprietary pricing tools like RateML. Guided by an experienced mentor, you'll apply your programming skills, learn new technologies, and make a tangible impact on the company’s mission to transform insurance through technology.

What you’ll do

As an intern at Nirvana, you will be mentored by one of our engineers (based in Chile, although as the company is distributed, you will get to interact with people from other countries such as the US and India) and get a chance to make a measurable impact in one or more of the following areas:

  • Safety

We are building a first-in-class data-driven safety platform. Leveraging telematics and violations data, we provide our customers with valuable insights to help them understand their data and become safer on the road. You’ll learn how data ingestion and processing work at scale and how all the pieces fit together to deliver a great experience.

  • Insured Experience

The team focuses on offering a world-class experience to the customers after they have bought an insurance policy with Nirvana. Leverages multiple apps, AI, and manipulation of data from multiple sources to help insureds with their claims, billing, and audits; and internal users of Nirvana who help Insureds. We are constantly experimenting with innovative solutions to help insureds interact with Nirvana, especially expediting claims submissions after incidents.

  • Pricing

Nirvana’s pricing is based on our proprietary rating model language, RateML. This in-house solution offers a user-friendly language for actuaries to create pricing models. The pricing team is responsible for delivering optimal pricing infrastructure to facilitate seamless integration with RateML. We empower teams, like Insurance Product, to develop and deploy pricing models, while also providing a straightforward interface for other teams (e.g. Underwriting) to execute specific models efficiently.

Who you are

  • Actively pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Civil Engineering, with all courses completed or up to one year remaining in their program. Students with more than one year remaining will not be considered for this role.

  • You have prior experience with software development/coding (applicable coursework, projects, internships, etc.).

  • Proficiency and experience with at least one of the following: Golang, JavaScript, Typescript, Java, or Python.

  • You learn quickly and can operate independently. You're not afraid to take something on just because you don’t know how to do it yet.

  • You are naturally curious, and you do not mind going down the rabbit hole as you figure out new concepts and debug problems.

  • You not only have the ability or skill to communicate effectively, but also have the willingness to be open and honest in your communication.

  • Ability to participate in a full-time internship between December and February.

Benefits
