We are seeking a Senior Payroll Accountant to own the end-to-end U.S. and Canada payroll lifecycle with a heavy focus on financial accuracy and process excellence. This role is designed for a professional who understands that payroll is a critical accounting function requiring robust controls and scalability. The ideal candidate is not only a technical expert in enterprise payroll platforms and multi-state taxation but is also a cooperative and highly responsive partner to our employees, ensuring the "human side" of payroll is never lost in the data.
Requirements are often considered a measure of how equipped you are to do the job, but sometimes, they aren’t the only factor. If you don’t have nearly enough experience, or not all the skills, we’d still like to hear from you. This could be the perfect fit for you and us.
We want to hear from you if you have:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is strongly preferred.
Experience: 7+ years of progressive experience in U.S. payroll with a focus on payroll accounting and multi-state compliance.
-
Technical Mastery: Extensive hands-on experience with payroll enterprise platforms (e.g. ADP Workforce Now, TriNet) (required) and modern HRIS platforms (e.g., Bob).
ERP & Financial Systems Expertise: Strong experience working with ERP/accounting systems is required, preferably NetSuite, including payroll-to-GL reconciliations, journal entries, and financial reporting support.
Accounting Fluency: Deep understanding of journal entries, labor allocations, and balance sheet reconciliations. NetSuite knowledge Required.
Communication: Exceptional "soft skills" with a proven track record of being cooperative and helpful in a high-growth, fast-paced environment.
Key Competencies
Financial Integrity: A "Controller mindset" regarding payroll accuracy and internal audit standards.
Scalability Mindset: The ability to build processes today that will still work when the company is 2x or 3x its current size.
Employee Advocacy: A commitment to excellence in the employee experience, ensuring payroll is a source of trust within the organization.
What you'll be doing:
Execution & Accounting Integration
Full-Cycle Ownership: Drive the execution of end-to-end U.S. and Canada payroll processing for a multi-state and multinational workforce
GL Mapping & Reconciliation: Own the payroll-to-General Ledger (GL) mapping process. Perform monthly reconciliations of payroll accounts, including taxes, benefits, and 401(k) contributions.
Month-End Close: Partner with the Finance team to manage payroll accruals, reclassifications, and journal entries to ensure a seamless month-end and year-end close.
Tax & Agency Management: Act as the lead for all state agency registrations, notices, and audits, ensuring the company remains in good standing across all jurisdictions.
Equity Payroll Administration: Process and oversee payroll implications related to RSUs, stock option exercises, equity vesting events, and supplemental wage taxation in partnership with Finance and Equity teams.
Controls & Scalability
Control Framework: Establish and maintain "best-in-class" internal controls and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to mitigate risk and ensure 100% data integrity.
Process Architecture: Evaluate current workflows to identify bottlenecks; design and implement automated, scalable solutions that can support rapid organizational growth.
Audit Readiness: Serve as the primary lead for payroll-related financial audits (Workers Comp, 401k, Year-end), providing organized documentation and clear narratives for all payroll-related accounting implications.
Employee Experience & Partnership
Proactive Responsiveness: Act as a dedicated resource for employee inquiries, providing timely, empathetic, and clear explanations regarding pay, taxes, and deductions.
Global Support: Provide support and accounting oversight for international payroll operations and vendors as needed.
Base salaries for this role range from $125,000 - $150,000.
