About Modular

We believe that AI is a net positive force in the world. Our vision and mission are to help rebuild AI infrastructure to advance humanity and our environment. We will do whatever it takes to empower our customers, team, and company to benefit from that pursuit. You can read about our culture and careers here to understand how we work and what we value.

We are owners and advocates for the underlying technologies, developer platforms, product components, and infrastructure. These essential building blocks form the high-quality and coherent experiences our users expect. We aim to drive the pace of innovation for every AI/ML developer.

About the role:

ML developers today face significant friction in taking trained models into deployment. They work in a highly fragmented space, with incomplete and patchwork solutions that require significant performance tuning and non-generalizable/ model-specific enhancements. At Modular, we are building the next generation AI platform that will radically improve the way developers build and deploy AI models.

A core part of this offering is providing a platform that allows customers to achieve state-of-the-art performance across model families, frameworks and hardware. As an AI Performance Engineer, you will join a small team of generalist engineers that optimize the performance of Modular’s MAX Engine in both breadth and depth. As part of deep dives on high-value models, you will collaborate with Kernel & Graph Compiler engineers to push Modular’s cutting-edge performance even further. Simultaneously, the performance team builds and uses analysis tooling to monitor the MAX engine’s performance over a vast array of user configurations, including Tensorflow, ONNX, PyTorch and Mojo models on a wide variety of CPU, GPU and Accelerator hardware.

LOCATION: Candidates based in the US or Canada are welcome to apply. You can work remotely from home.

What you will do:

  • Collaborate with Tooling & Infrastructure teams to design systems for automated performance analysis and benchmarking.
  • Collaborate with Graph Compiler & Kernels teams to design, triage, and track high-priority in-flight model optimizations
  • Work with the product team to understand customer use cases, relevant metrics, and design representative benchmarking pipelines
  • Design & develop automated regression detection & reversion system for wide variety of key customer metrics
  • Build statistical models and tools to operate on benchmarking & telemetry data and help develop key insights for performance, cloud costs, etc.

What you bring to the table:

  • 2+ years of professional or postgraduate academic experience working on or researching performance analysis, tooling or benchmarking
  • In-depth knowledge of Python
  • Experience in C++ programming and complex software systems.
  • Experience with performance modeling and analysis.
