The Position
We’re looking for a detail-oriented and proactive Senior Accountant to join our growing finance team. Reporting to the Accounting Manager, you’ll play a key role in maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and leading payroll operations. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys both the structure of accounting and the dynamic nature of a fast-paced biotech environment.
In this role you’ll be responsible for day-to-day accounting activities, payroll processing, and supporting audits and compliance initiatives. You’ll collaborate across departments, contribute to process improvements, and help ensure our financial operations run smoothly and efficiently.
The Impact You’ll Have
- Contribute to the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes by preparing journal entries and account reconciliations, especially for:
- Payroll accounts, including bonuses, paid time off (PTO), 401(k), and other benefits.
- Prepaid assets, fixed assets, and other areas, as needed.
- Serve as Maze’s payroll lead and subject matter expert, acting as the primary contact for ADP.
- Partner with HR and Benefits teams to ensure timely, accurate payroll processing and compliance with federal and state wage and hour laws.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support financial related to prepaid and fixed assets.
- Assist with payroll-related audits, including the 401(k), Workers' Compensation, and other statutory filings.
- Support quarterly reviews and annual financial audits with timely and accurate documentation.
- Identify and implement process improvements to support scalability and efficiency.
- Take on ad hoc projects and other responsibilities as needed.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
- 2–4+ years of experience in payroll processing for both exempt and non-exempt employees, with solid understanding of payroll regulations.
- Familiarity with payroll tax filings and year-end reporting (W-2, 3921, 1099, etc.)
- Hands-on experience with equity compensation, including stock options, RSUs, and ESPPs.
- 3+ years of general accounting experience required (public company experience preferred).
- Experience with ADP Workforce Now required.
- Proficiency in tools such as MS Excel, Outlook, NetSuite, Coupa, and Expensify is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of US GAAP, payroll best practices, tax regulations, and wage and hour laws.
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to stay connected and collaborative in a hybrid work environment.
- Self-starter who can work independently with general guidance, including 2-3+ days per week onsite at our South San Francisco office.

The expected annual salary range for employees located in the San Francisco Bay Area is $118,000 – $145,000. Additionally, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus.
Maze performs position-based compensation benchmarking to industry market data to ensure we pay competitive wages. Determination of starting salary will depend upon a variety of job-related factors, which may include professional experience, skills, and job location. The expected salary range for this role may be modified in the future.
