The Position
The Maze Clinical Sciences team is looking for a Senior Medical Director to play a central role in advancing our clinical development programs. We're looking for passionate and strategic leader to join our team of creative and dedicated professionals on a mission to turn groundbreaking genetic discoveries into life-saving medicines.
As a Senior Medical Director, you will drive the clinical strategy and execution for our pipeline, with specific leadership of our small molecule program targeting APOL1, a key genetic driver of chronic kidney disease. You’ll also contribute to the development of our broader pipeline, which includes precision medicines for renal, cardiac, and metabolic diseases, such as our second novel therapy for chronic kidney disease and phenylketonuria.
Success in this role requires collaboration, scientific curiosity, and leadership. You will work cross-functionally to design, conduct, and analyze key clinical studies, including first-in-human and proof-of-concept trials, helping to shape the future of Maze’s clinical programs. Your impact will be highly visible and integral to our mission.
This position reports to the Head of Clinical Sciences.
The Impact You’ll Have
- Lead the design, execution, and analysis of clinical trials for the APOL1 program.
- Lead the design and execution of clinical development plans for other early-stage clinical assets.
- Author and review clinical-regulatory documents, including study protocols, amendments, informed consents, study reports, and statistical analysis plans (SAPs).
- Develop and deliver scientific presentations and other communication materials for internal and external stakeholders, including investigators, partners, and advocacy groups.
- Engage with scientific thought leaders and patient advocacy groups to gather insights, shape clinical development plans, and build awareness of Maze’s pipeline.
- Partner with Development Science (clinical operations) to select study investigators and sites, ensuring strong professional relationships and engagement.
- Collaborate on the identification, selection, and oversight of vendors and CROs to support clinical program needs.
- Integrate timelines and budgets for clinical activities, aligning with overall corporate objectives in partnership with project management, regulatory, and other key stakeholders.

What We’re Looking For
- MD (or equivalent) or MD/PhD with 6+ years of industry experience drug development.
- Board eligibility/certification and clinical experience in internal medicine, pediatrics or surgery (nephrology or cardiometabolic disease expertise preferred).
- Experience as a clinical study medical monitor
- Strong background in developing and reviewing scientific publications, study protocols, investigator brochures, and other clinical-regulatory documents.
- Proven experience in early-stage and/or registration-enabling clinical programs, including CRO and site selection and relationship- building with investigators and advocacy groups.
- Expertise in clinical trial design, execution, and data interpretation, particularly for Phase 2 and 3
- Demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams and drive strategic decision-making.
- Exceptional organizational, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to translate corporate objectives into actionable clinical plans.
- A proactive, adaptable, and ethical mindset, with a commitment to excellence and collaboration.
- Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (up to 20%) for vendor visits, conferences, regulatory meetings, and advisory boards.

The expected annual salary range for employees located in the San Francisco Bay Area is $320,000 - $392,000. Additionally, this position is eligible for an annual performance bonus. Maze performs position-based compensation benchmarking to industry market data to ensure we pay competitive wages. Determination of starting salary will depend upon a variety of job-related factors, which may include professional experience, skills, and job location. The expected salary range for this role may be modified in the future.
