About Maze Therapeutics

Maze Therapeutics is a biopharmaceutical company that is harnessing the power of human genetics to transform the lives of patients, with a focus on genetically informed therapies for common diseases such as chronic kidney disease. Maze applies variant functionalization in tandem with advanced data science methods and a robust suite of research and development capabilities to advance a pipeline of novel precision medicines. Maze has developed the Maze Compass Platform TM, a proprietary, purpose-built platform to understand and integrate the critical step of variant functionalization into each stage of drug development. Utilizing the Maze Compass PlatformTM, Maze is building a broad portfolio of wholly owned and partnered programs. Maze is based in South San Francisco.

We are seeking an exceptional leader in statistical geneticist to join our Translational Genomics team, who brings experience managing high-performing teams of scientists and strong analytical skills with an ability to collaborate with biologists and other data scientists. As the Director Statistical Genetics, you will design, lead, and/or execute robust genetic association studies with the goal of identifying potential drug targets. In addition to performing analyses on large-scale genetic datasets, your team will integrate results from functional genomics experiments to complement allelic series grounded on known human genetic variants. You will contribute directly to the development of novel disease modifying therapeutics.

This role reports to the VP, Translational Genomics.

Your Impact Includes:

  • Leveraging major scientific and technological advances, including investment in biobanks linked to large-scale human health databases, cutting-edge informatics platforms, breakthrough understanding of biological pathways, and functional genomics capabilities
  • Identifying internal and external collaboration opportunities in the human genetics space
  • Identifying and integrating data tools to expand analysis capabilities and maintain an up to date understanding of statistical genetics capabilities
  • Performing and interpreting human genetic analyses using public and internal data to identify new targets and therapeutic hypotheses
  • Working in close collaboration with human genetics and functional genomics to integrate results from functional genomics studies with human genetics data for new target identification/prioritization
  • Managing internal FTEs as well as external collaborations in the human genetics space
  • Contributing to writing patents, reports, and scientific publications

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. with significant relevant experience in human genetics/statistical genetics/bioinformatics and the biologic interpretation of human genetic data
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of statistical geneticists
  • Well versed in the management, curation, and analysis of large (n>50,000) exome or whole-genome sequence datasets such as Geisinger, UK Biobank, TopMed, Gnomad, and others.
  • Experience in the analysis of large-scale genomic association studies in complex genetic diseases including identifying and removing most common sources of technical noise using cloud-enabled tools.
  • Strong computational/statistical skills (coding in Hail, python, R)
  • A highly motivated disposition and desire to push new scientific boundaries
