🌟 Your Impact at Lila
Lila Sciences is seeking a Lead of Electrochemistry to ideate and realize next-generation experimentation for the synthesis, characterization, and performance evaluation of electrochemical materials and devices. The successful candidates will join Lila’s Physical Sciences Research team to develop new concepts in instrumentation, workflows, and AI integration and will work closely with Lila’s Systems Engineering team to incorporate these concepts in autonomous research systems.
🛠️ What You'll Be Building
- Work with Physical Sciences senior leadership to establish a roadmap for Artificial Intelligence Science Factories (AISFs), including identification of off-the-shelf instrument solutions and opportunities for innovation in experimentation
- Lead a team of scientists to develop and execute autonomous materials science workflows in the field of electrochemistry
- Work with scientists to ideate methods to accelerate the synthesis and characterization of electrocatalysts, electrolytes, electrolyzers, and other devices for functionalities in electrocatalysis, electrochemical separations, and beyond.
- Design, prototype, and test custom instrumentation based on those methods
- Develop strategies to maximize the information gain per cost under considerations including
- Maximized signal-to-noise in characterization experiments
- Minimized material volume
- Automated down-selection or early-stopping methods
- Maximized experiment throughput
- Work with systems engineering team to design instrument prototypes that are commensurate with engineering plans for autonomous experimentation
- Document prototype development from conceptualization, through design, to realization and testing
- Develop methods to interface with machine learning methods across multiple experiment hierarchies
- Support and adopt tools for equipment maintenance and early detection of instrument failure
🧰 What You’ll Need to Succeed
- Experience with development of electrochemistry instrumentation and workflows for the interrogation of electrodes, electrolytes, and their assemblies
- Experience with establishing mechanistic understanding of (electro)chemical processes, including electrocatalysis and corrosion, and inferring their role in device performance
- Experience integrating experiment methods into throughput-matched workflows
- Experience with failure mode diagnosis and degradation analysis in electrochemical systems, including the development and application of accelerated stress tests for electrochemical devices and components
- Experience with defining and parameterizing workflows for Artificial Intelligence (AI) guidance in the design and execution of experiments
- Experience with team leadership and mentorship
- PhD and research leadership experience in Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or related field
- Strong self-starter and independent thinker, with strong attention to detail
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, capable of conveying technical information in a clear and thorough manner
- Eager to work with highly skilled and dynamic teams in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial, and technical setting
✨ Bonus Points For
- Experience with experiment automation
- Experience with commercial development of electrochemical technologies
- Experience with integration of machine learning methods in materials acceleration platforms
- Experience with interrogation of electrochemical materials via surface science
- Experience with nonaqueous electrolytes and in-glove-box experimentation
