Overview

Instacart’s Tax Team partners across the business to make grocery more accessible while navigating complex global tax rules at scale. Our Tax Technology group builds the data, systems, and tools that keep Instacart compliant, efficient, and insight-driven across a rapidly evolving marketplace.

We’re hiring a Senior Tax Technology Analyst to lead high-impact initiatives at the intersection of tax, data, and AI—most notably accelerating our Tax Attribute strategy across a large and ever-changing catalog and exploring ML-assisted solutions with our Machine Learning and Catalog partners. You’ll join a small, dynamic, and highly collaborative team where you’ll own outcomes end to end, work closely with Indirect and Direct Tax, Catalog, ML, Product, and Engineering, and see your work drive measurable business results quickly. This role is remote-friendly across the U.S. and Canada and sits within a Tax Team of 18 teammates, including a 5-person Tax Technology group.

About the Job

  • Own and advance our Tax Attribute program—designing data models, governance, and workflows that scale accurate product taxability across millions of items and 100+ jurisdictions, in partnership with Catalog, Indirect Tax, and ML teams.
  • Build, integrate, and optimize tax determination, calculation, and reporting solutions (e.g., with enterprise tax engines and internal services), ensuring accuracy, reliability, and performance within transactional systems.
  • Develop AI/ML-assisted classification and automation for tax use cases (e.g., product/merchant mapping, attribute extraction), including evaluation frameworks, human-in-the-loop quality controls, and measurable precision/recall targets.
  • Design and operate robust, SOX-compliant data pipelines and tooling (SQL, Python, cloud data warehouse, orchestration) with monitoring, alerting, and documentation that enable audit-ready transparency.
  • Lead cross-functional projects from discovery to delivery—translate tax requirements into technical solutions, manage roadmaps and priorities, and communicate progress, risks, and results to stakeholders at every level.

About You

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Engineering, Accounting Information Systems, or related field; or 8+ years of relevant experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 5+ years of experience in tax technology, data engineering, or analytics supporting tax functions within e-commerce, fintech, retail, or similar high-volume transaction environments.
  • 3+ years configuring and integrating enterprise tax engines (e.g., Avalara, Vertex, Sovos) via APIs within transactional systems and services.
  • Advanced SQL (3+ years) and Python (2+ years) for data processing, automation, and building production-grade workflows.
  • 2+ years building and operating ETL/ELT pipelines in a cloud data warehouse (e.g., Snowflake, BigQuery, or Redshift) with orchestration tools (e.g., Airflow or dbt), including experience implementing SOX-compliant controls and supporting audits.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience designing and governing product taxability attribute models and mappings at catalog scale, including data quality frameworks and stewardship.
  • Hands-on experience applying ML or LLMs to tax use cases (e.g., text classification, attribute extraction), including prompt design, evaluation metrics, and human-in-the-loop review.
  • Familiarity with marketplace facilitator rules, multi-jurisdiction (US and Canada) indirect tax, and systems such as NetSuite, Stripe/other payment platforms, and internal order/fulfillment services.
  • Proficiency with RESTful APIs, event streaming (e.g., Kafka), and observability tooling (e.g., Datadog) for resilient, monitored data and service operations.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., CPA, CMI, Avalara or Vertex certifications) or analytics credentials.
