Role: Senior Software Engineer - Ground Stations
• Location: Espoo, Finland
• Department: CONNECT and Ground Stations
• Reports to: Engineering Manager, CONNECT & Ground Stations
• Employment type: Permanent
• Workplace model: Hybrid
• Employment is subject to applicable security screening (incl. SUPO, where required)

Why this role matters:

This is a role where your work directly impacts how ICEYE’s satellites communicate with the ground. The systems you build ensure reliable connections between our satellite fleet and ground station partners worldwide, enabling successful mission execution and data delivery.

You will work on production-grade backend systems that handle integrations, availability, and real-time coordination in a distributed environment. The focus is on reliability, observability, and how systems perform in real operational conditions.

You own what you build end to end, from design to production. Our tech stack spans cloud, on-prem, and Kubernetes-based environments, combining modern software practices with real-world operational constraints.

Our engineering culture is AI-positive, with active use of tools like copilots and LLMs to improve speed, code quality, and overall productivity.

Who We Are

ICEYE delivers space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities to governments and allied nations. This includes sovereign and turnkey ISR missions leveraging ICEYE’s world-leading synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite technology, as well as access to data from the world’s largest SAR satellite constellation. These capabilities enable partners to detect and respond to critical changes anywhere on Earth with unprecedented speed and accuracy, day or night and in any weather, supported by ultra high-resolution imagery and high-frequency revisits.

As a trusted partner for defense, intelligence, security, and maritime domain awareness, ICEYE’s near real-time data creates a tactical advantage for mission-critical operations. Designed for dual use, the platform also serves civil protection and commercial users for natural-catastrophe intelligence, insurance, maritime monitoring including oil-spill detection, and finance, contributing to global security and community resilience.

ICEYE is headquartered in Finland and operates globally across Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia-Pacific. We have more than 900 employees, united by a shared vision: improving life on Earth by becoming the global source of truth in Earth Observation.

Your day-to-day responsibilities

  • Design and operate scalable backend services for ground station integrations and availability

  • Build production-grade systems, including APIs and data models for station configuration, scheduling, and performance tracking

  • Own services end-to-end: design → deploy → monitor → improve

  • Work closely with internal teams and external ground station partners to enable reliable communication workflows

  • Improve system reliability, performance, and observability across Kubernetes-based cloud and on-prem environments

What we’re looking for

Must haves:

  • 5+ years of experience building and running production backend systems

  • Strong focus on operability alongside implementation (monitoring, alerting, debugging)

  • Proven experience designing and operating scalable services with APIs and databases in production

  • Proficiency in writing clean, maintainable code in Python, Go, or similar

  • Hands-on experience with modern infrastructure (Kubernetes, containers, CI/CD, infrastructure-as-code)

  • Experience working with relational or NoSQL databases such as PostgreSQL or MongoDB

  • Active use of AI-assisted development tools (e.g., copilots, LLMs) to improve productivity and code quality

  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex, distributed system problems in production environments

Nice to haves:

• Understanding of satellite communications, RF propagation, or modulation concepts
• Experience working with ground station vendors or satellite operations environments

Application Process

• Talent Partner Screening Call
• Hiring Manager Interview
• Take-home Work Sample and Technical Interview
• Values & Fit Interview
• Final Interview with SVP of Engineering
