Grammarly is excited to offer a remote-first hybrid working model. Team members work primarily remotely in the United States, Canada, Ukraine, Germany, or Poland. Certain roles have specific location requirements to facilitate collaboration at a particular Grammarly hub.

All roles have an in-person component: Conditions permitting, teams meet 2–4 weeks every quarter at one of Grammarly’s hubs in San Francisco, Kyiv, New York, Vancouver, and Berlin, or in a workspace in Kraków. This flexible approach gives team members the best of both worlds: plenty of focus time along with in-person collaboration that fosters trust and unlocks creativity.

Grammarly team members in this role must be based in the United States, and they must be able to collaborate in person 4 weeks per quarter, traveling if necessary to the hub(s) where the team is based. Strong preference will be given to those located in the New York City area.

The opportunity

Grammarly is the world’s leading AI writing assistance company trusted by over 30 million people and 70,000 professional teams every day. From instantly creating a first draft to perfecting every message, Grammarly’s product offerings help people at 96% of the Fortune 500 get their point across—and get results. Grammarly has been profitable for over a decade because we’ve stayed true to our values and built an enterprise-grade product that’s secure, reliable, and helps people do their best work—without selling their data. We’re proud to be one of Inc.’s best workplaces, a Glassdoor Best Place to Work, one of TIME’s 100 Most Influential Companies, and one of Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies in AI.

To achieve our ambitious goals, we’re looking for a Manager - Core Data Science who will use data to directly impact Grammarly’s products and strategy. This role will report to the Data Science Director of the Core Product and Quality Data Science organization, which contains multiple data science and software engineering teams. This role provides an opportunity for depth and ownership over our core product experience and broad cross-functional collaboration opportunities with our growth, enterprise, and quality data science teams.

Grammarly’s engineers and researchers have the freedom to innovate and uncover breakthroughs—and, in turn, influence our product roadmap. The complexity of our technical challenges is growing rapidly as we scale our interfaces, algorithms, and infrastructure. You can hear more from our team on our technical blog.

Your impact

As a Manager, Core Data Science, you will manage a team of data scientists responsible for identifying and sizing core product opportunities and evaluating the success of new product innovations and feature launches. You will need to see across teams and features to create a holistic picture of the state of our products using data while acting as a trusted thought partner to our product managers and leaders.

In this role, you will:

  • Own the technical vision and direction for your data science team (directly manage 5+ data scientists, with opportunities for team growth in the future).
  • Act as a trustworthy data science thought partner to the Product team: Work closely with PMs and Product leadership to identify new opportunities and help direct and shape Grammarly's product roadmap using data.
  • Dive deep into the data to become an expert on our product offerings and AI technical infrastructure to help the company make sound strategic decisions.
  • Evangelize metrics best practices: Advocate for clear, useful, scalable North Star metrics, critically examine our metrics, and coach the team to improve them.
  • Be an advocate for rapid and frequent experimentation: encourage experimentation best practices and ensure we learn and improve as a direct result.
  • Develop processes and create cultural norms on the team that help people move more quickly and achieve a larger impact.
  • Cultivate an ownership mindset and culture on your team and across product teams: provide the necessary metrics to help us understand what is working, what is not, and how to fix it.
  • Set high performance and quality standards and coach team members to meet them; mentor and grow junior and senior IC talent.

We’re looking for someone who

  • Embodies our EAGER values—is ethical, adaptable, gritty, empathetic, and remarkable.
  • Is inspired by our MOVE principles, which are the blueprint for how things get done at Grammarly: move fast and learn faster, obsess about creating customer value, value impact over activity, and embrace healthy disagreement rooted in trust.
  • Is able to collaborate in person 4 weeks per quarter, traveling if necessary to the hub where the team is based.
  • Has at least 2+ years of management experience.
  • Has the ability and desire to operate in a fast-paced, dynamic environment where things change quickly.
  • Can wade through ambiguity and disagreement to chart a clear path forward and is highly skilled at bringing stakeholders together to reach alignment.
  • Has strong communication skills and can express a transparent, trustworthy, data-driven point of view with senior leaders.
  • Is a proactive and self-driven problem-solver who has independently spearheaded and driven complex, cross-functional projects to a successful outcome.
  • Has the technical skills necessary to guide and coach the data science team to deliver impactful and high-quality work (expertise in statistics, A/B testing, SQL, and Python or R are a must).
  • Has deep familiarity and experience with product metrics and KPIs, understanding how to measure the success of products at all stages of development.
  • Has a strong product mindset, understands how great products operate and are built, and has extensive experience working with PMs.
  • Has strong data intuition and detail orientation. Understands what to expect from product data. Can interpret and tease through complex data to find actionable insight. Skilled at spotting quality issues.
  • Has a proven track record of developing useful metrics that gained traction within an organization and led to tangible outcomes.
  • Has an experimentation mindset, adheres to experimentation best practices, and knows how to design and run high-impact experiments.
  • Bonus points if you:
    • Have experience directly driving product roadmap conversations.
    • Have a mix of larger (~1000+ ees) tech company and startup experience.
