About Charm
Our mission is to return the atmosphere to 280 ppm CO₂. We convert excess inedible biomass into carbon-rich bio-oil and inject it into underground storage for permanent carbon removal. At scale we can use bio-oil to make fossil-free iron.
Our carbon removal pathway took off in 2020 with initial purchases from customers like Stripe, Shopify & Microsoft. Since then we’ve scaled to thousands of tons of carbon removal, over a hundred employees, and now have three locations in San Francisco, Colorado, and Kansas. Come join us in 2024 as we aim to become one of the first companies to put 10,000 tons of carbon back underground!
We're looking to expand our team of ambitious creative and hands-on forward-thinking humans. We value psychological safety and collaboration. We take calculated risks and don't sweep mistakes under the rug; instead, we pin them to the wall and learn from them. We value that everyone’s unique backgrounds and perspectives shape their work. We encourage you to read our company values.
Come help us reverse climate change. Gigatons or bust!
You will be responsible for the execution of new mechanical design projects, as well as the implementation of design changes on existing electro-mechanical systems. This involves an end-to-end ownership process including concept/detailed design, procurement, system documentation, installation, and production validation. You will collaborate with a cross functional group of Design Engineers, Operations personnel, and Engineering technicians responsible for pyrolysis development and production support to determine the most appropriate and purpose-driven tests and design/process updates. Your role is critical in shaping both current and future pyrolyzers, so ensuring the production of robust designs and validation data will be paramount. Every day will be different as you lead the hands-on assembly and integration of hardware, analyze and organize data, and work with others to help determine the critical path forward for the company.
This role reports to our Engineering Manager in Colorado at the Fort Lupton production site where you will be working on a team of cross functional engineers and technicians to accomplish your goals. You will also have counterparts in the San Francisco office who will be operating similar pyrolysis equipment, and therefore you will build a partnership across the two Charm offices. Best and most importantly, your continual improvement and thorough knowledge of our pyrolysis equipment will ensure our hardware will be ready to go out and start saving the world!
Responsibilities:
- Full ownership of a range of design scope from full integrated systems to smaller continuous improvement initiatives.
- Work alongside both engineering and operations teams to commission new incoming machines and hand off these machines to the production environment.
- Maintain rigorous design documentation and data collection standards to ensure we’re learning through the design and validation process.
- Work alongside Operations personnel to provide issue triage support and improve the overall production efficiency of the equipment.
Requirements:
- 5+ years of experience in developing physical hardware, ideally a test bench.
- A self-starter who can identify mechanical improvements that will make the system more operable, and the engineering acumen to see those through to completion.
- Proven ability to own a piece of hardware’s continual improvement and development.
- Experience building simple data collection frameworks and the attention to detail to ensure all data is captured in the same way throughout the test campaign.
- A desire to be hands on with equipment more than half the time.
- Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree
Bonus (but not required):
- Practical experience with iterative improvements of machines in a production environment, including software integration.
- Experience executing tests and test campaigns.
- You have some knowledge of pyrolysis, gasification or other thermal conversion processes.
- You have a familiarity with Linux, Python and scripting languages.
- You have experience with SaaS tools like Datadog and/or time series databases.
