Where and how you can work
Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.

Video is more popular than ever in 2023, and we're on a mission to make Canva Video the default video platform for everyone. With millions of users using Canva every day, this is an opportunity to redefine visual and animated communication and have a global impact on the way people create video content.
Canva Video has one of the largest audiences of content creators in the world. You’ll be a key driver in helping achieve our vision of becoming the go-to video platform, and build a multimedia playground for everyone - from individuals to small businesses; from large organisations to NGOs. Many of our newest features aim to help empower the world to design great videos by bringing "magic" (AI/ML) capabilities to our product, and you’ll be working in a full-stack team to build and own the backend services that underpin them.
What you’ll do (Responsibilities)
- Build tools and frameworks that help us rapidly and reliably conduct experiments across different parts of the Canva app
- Design, develop and deploy solutions and hands-on software development – working closely with leads, designers, and product managers to deliver features and experiments to our customers worldwide
- Responsible for the entire lifecycle of the code: design, development, test, production, and subsequent fixes and improvements for projects or features within the team
- Work collaboratively and consult with leads, product managers, and engineers across teams at Canva to unblock back-end works that help your group deliver features and experiments to our customers worldwide
- Communicate effectively with Product Managers and Engineers across Canva when developing a solution; seeks and incorporates diverse perspectives to address complex issues
- Facilitate knowledge sharing and effectively advocate for engineering needs to non-technical stakeholders within the group
- Model initiative and ownership in achieving goals, improving processes and solutions
- Identify opportunities for cross-team collaboration to work on new ideas and improvements that help achieve our goals
Required Experience & Skills
- Commercial experience developing complex web applications
- At Canva we use Core Java as our backend programming language so we need someone who is comfortable using Java
- Firmly grounded computer science and engineering fundamentals including concurrency, multithreading, data structures, solution design, architecture, and design patterns
- Working collaboratively with team members and communicating effectively
- Good writing and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with Video
- Familiarity or interest in ML and AI
- Interest in Social Media and short-form videos
