Where and how you can work
Our flagship campus is in Sydney. We also have a campus in Melbourne and co-working spaces in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. But you have choice in where and how you work. That means if you want to do your thing in the office (if you're near one), at home or a bit of both, it's up to you.
What you’d be doing in this role
As Canva scales change continues to be part of our DNA. But we like to think that's all part of the fun. So this will give you the flavour of the type of things you'll be working on when you start, but this will likely evolve.
About the role
Canva is looking for a Patent Attorney to be part of our highly motivated, tight-knit, and collaborative global Legal team. This role will be part of the Intellectual Property (IP) speciality.
Having grown our in-house IP team substantially last year, we are now on the lookout for an additional team member to utilise their expertise and passion for patents, to help the team achieve our Crazy Big Goals in this space!
What you'll do
- Assist with managing Canva’s global patent and design portfolio primarily focusing on patent prosecution
- Partner with our Senior Patent Counsel to aid our engineering, product and design teams to identify patentable inventions and registrable designs
- Manage Canva’s patent incentive and recognition programme
- Provide internal education and training related to patents
- Assistance with other IP matters as relevant (e.g. open source)
We'd love it if you have
- Registered Australian Patent Attorney, a computer science or software engineering qualification would also be highly beneficial
- Experienced as a Patent Attorney, with your experience gained in-house at a technology company or with a respected law firm or patent attorney firm representing technology companies
- The ability to manage global patent and design portfolios, with a focus on patent prosecution
- Additional exposure to drafting software patent applications would be great!
- Strong communication skills, with experience translating complex legal concepts into practical solutions
