Anduril Industries is a defense technology company with a mission to transform U.S. and allied military capabilities with advanced technology. By bringing the expertise, technology, and business model of the 21st century’s most innovative companies to the defense industry, Anduril is changing how military systems are designed, built and sold. Anduril’s family of systems is powered by Lattice OS, an AI-powered operating system that turns thousands of data streams into a realtime, 3D command and control center. As the world enters an era of strategic competition, Anduril is committed to bringing cutting-edge autonomy, AI, computer vision, sensor fusion, and networking technology to the military in months, not years.

We are looking for a Senior Director of Engineering who will be responsible for driving all of the engineering efforts in our Air Defense business unit. This leader will coordinate planning and execution against a wide variety of efforts including full product lifecycle ownership of multiple types of drone aircraft programs (anvil and roadrunner) and missile systems, custom sensors (both in house and 3rd party products), electronic warfare products, sentry tower systems including optics, radars, and other sensors and compute, command and control software, as well as ground control station hardware. Additional initiatives are also in progress.

We are seeking someone with proven experience leading complex robotics system development at large scale. In order to be successful at Anduril, our engineering leaders need to be fluent in problem analysis and rapid development to drive complex system level design trades and achieve mission solutions. In addition to carrying out the engineering product development, production support, and sustainment through the entire product lifecycle, this person must demonstrate a history of success coordinating large teams of at least 300+ engineers against a complex schedule with multiple customers and disparate contract obligations.

In short this is the “CTO” role for the air defense business line within Anduril. This role will report to the general manager for air defense.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

  • Direct all engineering activities to include team building, execution, process, technical oversight, and budget monitoring.
  • Design and develop a counter UAS and Air Defense capability from first principles to integration of software and various sensors and effectors in coordination with a broader engineering team.
  • Work with our product management and business development teams to distill a CONOP and identify leading drivers of success
  • Define the architecture topology that best meets the CONOP and understand key trades that are made through simulation and/or exploratory prototyping techniques. This includes but is not limited to developing accurate models to direct design of various vehicle subsystems (sensing, compute, communications, energy storage and management, etc.).
  • Prioritize and develop clear engineering strategies and accompanied resource plans. This is achieved by creating meaningful abstraction between sub-systems to guide engineering development efforts at scale and speed.
  • Incorporate DFM and other manufacturing considerations on the way to high-quality mass production.
  • Create and carry out a validation plan for the end to end system.
  • Own related reliability, yield, and performance efforts through development and into production.
  • Support and field systems in a hands-on fashion.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BS/MS in Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in a CTO, Department lead, Chief Engineer, or Architect role coordinating or directing the work of 100s of engineers.
  • Previous work leading teams focused on systems architecture of radar, missile, Command and Control (C2), and/or weapon systems.
  • Strong understanding of the “why” behind sensing, effector, fire control in Air Defense applications.
  • Experience in system level analysis and requirements flow-down to disparate teams.
  • Proven experience leading development teams with mission-level models to inform design, operation, and troubleshooting of complex subsystems and their interactions in air defense applications.
  • Must be able to obtain and hold a U.S. Top Secret security clearance.
  • Some travel is required.
