What You Will Contribute To Altos

Altos Labs™ is a biotechnology start-up that is dedicated to unraveling the deep biology of cellular rejuvenation programming. Our mission to restore cell health and resilience to reverse disease, injury, and disabilities that occur throughout life. We are seeking an energetic and creative patent lawyer or patent agent to join a dynamic legal department that enables highly collaborative organizations to do great science and translate that science into novel therapeutics.

This position reports to the Head of Global IP and is an onsite role located in Redwood City, California.

Responsibilities

  • Be the first point of contact for all legal matters (including transactions) as a trusted advisor and partner for the Bay Area Institute.
  • Advise on and manage legal matters relating to patentability, invention capture, freedom to operate, due diligence assessments, portfolio development, adverse patent office actions, IP transaction agreements (including licensing, collaboration agreements, and strategic commercial agreements), IP enforcement, and other corporate initiatives.
  • Prepare global patent applications and over time prosecute and maintain global patent portfolios.
  • Provide advice and counsel on trade secrets, copyrights and trademarks.
  • Thrive as part of a global IP team and support projects and assignments across all sites as needed.
  • Foster a collaborative partnership with other legal, business, and science functions to provide advice and strategic counsel on IP matters.
  • Maintain current knowledge of IP case law and emerging industry trends.
  • Creatively balance competing priorities, legal risks, and operational challenges to deliver business goals.
  • Comfortably navigate ambiguity while providing pragmatic and actionable legal advice.
  • Manage outside counsel work product and budget.
  • Be a model of high integrity.
  • Other assignments and responsibilities as assigned by your manager

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience providing IP support to clients in the pharma or biotech industry, including at least 5 years in-house.
  • Bachelor’s degree required in biology, chemistry, or related sciences. Advanced degree in relevant technical area is a plus.
  • Registered before United States Patent and Trademark Office.
  • If US attorney,
    • Juris Doctorate from an ABA-accredited law school is required.
    • Admission to the California Bar or the ability to qualify as Registered In-House Counsel.
  • Experience that includes all aspects of global IP portfolio management and IP transactions including invention capture, patent drafting, patent prosecution, due diligence, freedom to operate analysis, IP transactions (including licenses, collaborations, MTAs, and the like), adverse patent matter management (IPRs, ex parte reviews, oppositions, patent litigation, etc.), and IP and regulatory exclusivities.
  • Track record of:
    • Crafting and implementing innovative, business-oriented IP strategies in a rapidly shifting environment;
    • Working collaboratively, thinking on the fly, and using sound judgment to make practical decisions under tight timelines; and
    • Tackling matters of first impression and outside of areas of expertise.
  • Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive and diverse workforce that enables all participants to contribute to their full potential.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Global patent experience a plus.
  • Comfort with AI/ML technologies desired, but not required.

The salary range for Redwood City, CA:

  • Director, Intellectual Property: $329,800 - $446,200
  • Senior Director, Intellectual Property: $372,300 - $503,700
