Job Title: Quality Assurance Team Lead

Industry Background: Energy storage is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global energy economy, with annual stationary storage capacity additions projected to grow 23% per year from 2025 to 2035, driven by surging electricity demand from electrification, data centers, and AI infrastructure. Yet lithium-ion — the dominant technology — remains plagued by inherent flammability risks, high-profile fires that have eroded public trust, and fragile supply chains. Alsym Energy is developing non-flammable, high-performance sodium-ion batteries that solve these fundamental limitations to enable a new generation of safe and cost-effective energy storage based on globally abundant sodium.

Job Summary:

As Alsym scales from pilot-line production toward larger-volume manufacturing, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Quality Assurance Team Lead to build and lead our quality systems, resources, and culture.

This role will work closely with Alsym's Engineering, Analytical, and Supply Chain teams to establish the quality function - including designing and hands-on implementation of the quality management system (QMS) and establishing quality processes and controls in cell and materials manufacturing - while partnering closely with operations and site leadership to lead Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) capabilities as Alsym grows from pilot production to full-scale manufacturing of Na-ion battery cells and materials.

Role & Responsibilities

Quality Leadership & Strategy

  • Develop and execute the site quality strategy, building the QMS and QA/QC organization to support growth from pilot-scale to high-volume manufacturing.
  • Serve as a key member of the site leadership team, driving cross-functional quality initiatives across R&D, Engineering, Operations, and Supply Chain.
  • Establish a culture of quality, accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellence through team development, coaching, and strategic hiring.

Quality Systems & Compliance

  • Design, implement, and scale a fit-for-purpose QMS, including document control, change management, corrective action plans, audits, and compliance with applicable standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead internal, customer, supplier, and regulatory audits while ensuring product safety, reliability, environmental compliance, and risk mitigation.

Product, Process & Supplier Quality

  • Own product and process quality across incoming materials, manufacturing, testing, and product release.
  • Partner with Engineering to ensure robust process transfer, Design for Quality (DFQ), Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and effective quality validation plans.
  • Partner with Supply Chain, Sales, and Engineering on supplier quality management, customer quality activities, root-cause investigations, and corrective actions to improve reliability, yield, and customer satisfaction.

Continuous Improvement & Performance

  • Drive data-driven quality improvements through SPC, FMEA, Six Sigma, Lean methodologies, and predictive quality tools.
  • Reduce defects, scrap, rework, and cost of poor quality while improving process capability, manufacturing yields, and operational performance.
  • Develop and communicate quality metrics, dashboards, and performance reports to leadership.

Required Skills & Experience:

  • 5+ years of quality leadership experience in manufacturing; battery, chemicals, automotive, pharmaceutical, or related industries preferred.
  • Proven experience building a QMS and/or QA/QC organization from inception, including systems, processes, and talent.
  • Demonstrated success leading and developing quality teams in high-growth or scaling manufacturing environments.
  • Strong knowledge of quality systems, tools, and methodologies, including SPC, FMEA, CAPA, root-cause analysis, Lean, and Six Sigma.
  • Ability to operate effectively in fast-paced, ambiguous environments with a hands-on builder mentality.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and cross-functional leadership skills. Start-up leadership is a plus.
  • ASQ CQE, Six Sigma Green Belt, or Black Belt certification preferred.

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, Supply Chain, or a related technical field.

Additional Requirements:

  • On-site presence required at Alsym Energy's Massachusetts facility.
  • Ability to travel ~20% (domestically and internationally), to suppliers, customers, and partner sites.
