Job Title: Quality Implementation Lead

Job Summary: As the Quality Development Lead, you will be the architect and guardian of Alsym Energy’s overarching quality standards. This is a high-impact, "player-coach" role where you will need to transition fluidly between hands-on inspection/testing (QC) and the strategic development of our Quality Management System (QMS) and quality assurance program (QA). You will ensure that our non-flammable battery technology meets the rigorous safety and performance standards required for global energy storage and electric vehicle markets.

Industry Background: Energy storage is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the global energy economy, with annual stationary storage capacity additions projected to grow 23% per year from 2025 to 2035, driven by surging electricity demand from electrification, data centers, and AI infrastructure. Yet lithium-ion — the dominant technology —remains plagued by inherent flammability risks, high-profile fires that have eroded public trust, and fragile supply chains. Alsym Energy is developing non-flammable, high-performance sodium-ion batteries that solve these fundamental limitations to enable a new generation of safe and cost-effective energy storage based on globally abundant sodium.

Key Qualifications:

  • Education: BS or MS in Industrial, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Supply Chain/Operations & Information Management, or a related field focusing on quality development or operations.
  • Experience: 6+ years in a high-precision, high volume manufacturing environment. Direct experience in battery manufacturing (cell assembly, electrode coating, materials development, or formation) is highly preferred.
  • Statistical Mastery: Advanced proficiency in JMP, Minitab, or Python for data analysis and SPC.
  • Hands-on Skills: Proficiency with materials characterization tools (SEM/EDS, XRD) and precision measurement hardware (Karl Fischer titration, laser gauges).
  • Translation and understanding of process controls and the impact on final product quality.
  • Experience with process control tools and implementation - vision systems, metrology tools, optical microscopy, defect detection and characterization, data logging, weld-join assessment, electrical diagnostics. Setting materials and parts specification targets will also be necessary.
  • Certifications: ASQ Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) or Six Sigma Green/Black Belt is a significant advantage.
  • Communication: Exceptional communicator adept at managing internal and external partnerships.
  • Technical Expertise: Proficient in Lean, SPC, Six Sigma, and DFM principles.
  • Problem Solving: Proven success in complex problem-solving and process optimization.
  • Travel & Engagement: Available for up to 30% domestic and international travel, including short-notice supplier visits.

Roles and Responsibilities:

1. Strategic Quality Assurance (The Coach)

  • QMS Architect: Lead the development of Alsym’s quality program, including design, implementation, and management of a robust Quality Management System (QMS) compliant with ISO 9001 (transitioning toward IATF 16949).
  • Quality Culture: Act as the internal champion for quality, training R&D and manufacturing teams on SOPs, document control, “right-first time" and continuous improvement mindsets. Work with R&D to ensure Quality by Design is implemented during the R&D phase
  • Supplier Partnerships: Work with Supply Chain and Engineering teams to develop and lead the Supplier Quality program, including Supplier Corrective Action Requests, Onsite Quality audits, developing internal material specification and incoming material inspections to ensure Alsym’s rigorous quality, performance, and safety standards are met.
  • Risk Mitigation: Facilitate PFMEA sessions to proactively identify and engineer out failure modes in the cell assembly process to achieve a design for manufacturability.

2. Technical Quality Control (The Player)

  • Metrology & Testing: Establish and perform hands-on incoming, representative sampling methodology, in-process, and final inspections. You will be the "go-to" for calibrating precision equipment and interpreting complex data sets.
  • Process Control: Implement Statistical Process Control (SPC) at critical production stages at contract manufacturers (e.g., slurry mixing, coating, and winding) to monitor quality and reduce variance of cylindrical and prismatic battery cells.
  • Root Cause Analysis: Lead the investigation into any cell failures or performance deviations using 8D, 5-Whys, or Fishbone methodologies to drive process optimization and quality development.
  • Yield Optimization: Analyze scrap data and First Pass Yield (FPY) to provide actionable feedback to the Engineering and Operations teams.

The Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Assertive Diplomacy: You can stop a production line when a quality gate is missed while maintaining a collaborative relationship with production partners.
  • Growth Mindset: You are bored by "maintenance mode" roles. You want to build the manuals, choose the software, and hire the team.
  • Scientific Curiosity: You are energized by the challenge of working with novel chemistries with non-standard battery materials.
