Job Title: Senior Electrode Engineer

Job Summary: Alsym Energy is seeking a highly skilled Senior Electrode Engineer to lead the

development and optimization of high-performance electrode formulations for our proprietary battery technology. You will own the transition from lab-scale innovation to production-ready formulations, focusing on maximizing energy density and cycle life while ensuring manufacturability. This role requires a deep understanding of the interplay between material properties, slurry rheology, and coating parameters to deliver consistent, high-quality electrodes. The ideal candidate is a product-focused scientist who can design rapid, component-level tests to predict cell-level performance.

Industry Background: Energy storage systems is a rapidly emerging field. Over the last few years,

supply-chain constraints and significant safety incidents arising from lithium-ion batteries globally have resulted in a dramatic increase in costs and reduced confidence in the reliability of the technology. Alsym is working on an exciting proprietary battery technology that is expected to compete with state-of-the-art lithium-ion batteries while offering the technology at a fraction of the cost and with inherent nonflammability.

Key Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemistry, or a related field.
  • 3+ years of battery industry experience specifically in electrode development for Liion or Na-ion batteries.
  • Proven ability to relate electrode component properties to cell performance.
  • Expertise in slurry rheology characterization and tuning formulations for various coating operations and scales.
  • Experience in binder package selection and optimization of conductive carbon additives.
  • Hands-on experience with electrode calendering, lamination studies, and adhesion testing.
  • Strong understanding of drying profiles and their impact on electrode coating integrity and performance.
  • Experience with battery manufacturing unit operations and a focus on scalable production.
  • Strong characterization background with failure mode or root cause analysis experience. Prior experience with Karl-Fischer titration, N2 adsorption porosimetry (BET), mercury intrusion porosimetry, pyncnometry, particle size analysis, Raman spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are a plus.
  • Experience in electrochemical or battery testing techniques such as CV, GITT/PITT, HPPC, dQ/dV, and EIS.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Design and refine anode and cathode formulations to achieve high energy density and long cycle life.
  • Conduct electrode calendaring and lamination studies to optimize electrode density, porosity, and contact resistance and understand their impact on cell performance.
  • Design and execute component-level tests (e.g., rheology, adhesion, electrolyte wetting) to accurately assess electrode performance and reduce reliance on long-term cell data for development.
  • Understand and optimize the effects of drying profiles and coating parameters to improve the quality and consistency of electrodes.
  • Recommend formulations robust for large-scale production. Ability to adapt formulations to new mixing and coatings unit operations.
  • Work closely with analytical, electrode engineering, and cell design teams to overcome performance limitations.
  • Identify and resolve electrode and formulation issues to ensure consistent, high quality electrode production.
