Senior Cathode Materials Lead
Alsym Energy
Title: Senior Cathode Materials Lead
About the Role
We are seeking a dynamic and versatile Senior Scientist with proven experience in cathode active materials development to join our growing technical team. This role will provide candidates with the opportunity to apply technical fundamental and creativity towards electrode systems, including the design, particle engineering, process development, formulation, and performance optimization of materials for next generation energy storage technologies. This role is ideal for a scientific leader who thrives in cross-disciplinary environments, has a track record of scaling innovations from lab to pilot, and possesses a deep understanding of structure-property-performance relationships of cathode active materials, from powder processing through to electrochemical considerations.
This position will play a key role in developing and scaling particle technologies to support product innovation, process optimization, scale-up, competitive benchmarking and quality control across R&D and pilot-line operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Establish cathode active materials design and develop and implement corresponding manufacturing processes to meet cell- level performance requirements.
- Design and optimize particle engineering processes including spray drying, milling, carbonization, surface coating and thermal processing (e.g., calcination, annealing) to tune particle morphology, size distribution, crystallinity, surface area, and functionality.
- Collaborate with synthetic chemists, analytical chemists, and engineers to scale lab-based particle processes to pilot and manufacturing levels; oversee tech transfers.
- Implement quality control procedures and control plans to ensure consistency and performance of engineered particles across batches and scales.
- Serve as a technical liaison between R&D and manufacturing partners, contributing to design of experiments, process documentation, and troubleshooting investigations.
- Work hands-on with advanced material characterization techniques such as SEM, XRD, and particle size analyzers; coordinate external testing as needed.
- Mentor junior scientists and contribute to strategic planning across R&D pipelines.
Required Qualifications
- M.S., or Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
- Minimum 5+ years of industrial experience in powder design/ engineering, particle process development and optimization.
- Minimum 3+ years industrial experience in the design, synthesis and performance evaluation of cathode active materials for lithium, sodium or related chemistries for energy storage applications.
- Working knowledge of particle characterization techniques and analytical tools.
- Experience in battery materials, catalysts, inorganic materials or ceramics is required.
- Knowledge of electrochemical performance testing relating to its intersection with particle or materials design.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong foundation in materials or surface chemistry, with experience in optimizing rheology, dispersion and stability of systems.
- Lead development of slurry formulations for performance optimization and downstream applications in material delivery systems.
- Strong project management skills, with the ability to lead cross-functional teams and deliver against multiple timelines.
