Job Title: Battery Safety Engineer –R&D Lab Operations

Job Summary: Alsym Energy is looking for a self-driven and motivated Safety Engineer with a passion in the field of energy storage. In this position, the candidate will play a critical role in ensuring a safe working environment within the R&D lab, and have an opportunity to contribute to innovative advancements in materials and processes for next-generation energy storage technologies. The engineer will assess and mitigate risks, develop safety protocols, and contribute to the overall safety culture of the organization. The successful candidate will be responsible for active R&D efforts and will work closely with a team of engineers and scientists to deliver products with demanding performance requirements. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in chemistry, materials science, or a related field, combined with proven project management skills and a passion for innovation.

Industry Background: Energy storage system design is a rapidly evolving field. Over the last few years, supply-chain constraints and significant safety incidents arising from lithium-ion batteries have resulted in a dramatic increase in costs and reduced confidence in the reliability of the technology. Alsym is working on exciting proprietary battery technologies with a focus on inherent nonflammability designed to accelerate the decarbonization of energy and transportation systems. Our research focuses on chemical syntheses, battery cell safety analyses, and scaling up of new chemistries, in addition to maintaining compliance with industry standards.

As part of our team, you will work closely with Site Operations, Electrode Engineering and Battery Test teams to evaluate accelerated testing methods, asses safety plans, and manage lab safety. This role will require hands-on work in the lab and cross-functional collaboration.

Qualifications:

  • Master's/Doctoral degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Safety Engineering or a related field.
  • 8+ years of battery industry experience, preferably in a research and development environment.
  • Strong understanding of materials science principles, characterization techniques, and processing methods. Familiarity with relevant software tools and databases.
  • Hands-on experience with pyrophoric materials required
  • Hands-on experience with combustible dusts, flammable solids and self-heating materials preferred
  • Recognizes the safety risks in producing, handling, transporting, storing, or recycling battery cells
  • Knowledge of safety regulations and standards related to battery handling, which may include electric vehicles and battery production, and OSHA permissible exposure limits
  • Proven ability to plan, execute, and deliver complex projects on time.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and team-building skills.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, identify root causes, and develop effective solutions.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and adjust to changing priorities.

Roles & Responsibilities:

  • Maintain essential safety aspects of battery research, testing, storage, handling, and disposal, including administrative and engineering controls, risks and hazards, mitigation, and safety compliance.
  • Conduct risk assessments and safety audits to identify hazards in the R&D and manufacturing processes.
  • Develop and implement safety protocols and procedures to ensure compliance with industry regulations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to promote a safety-first culture.
  • Provide training and guidance to employees on safety practices related to chemical handling and battery production, glovebox, and dry-room activity.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, local laws, regulations and Corporate Safety and Health policies
  • Investigate accidents and incidents to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
  • Participates in the implementation of regular inspections and audits to identify and assess workplace hazards, unsafe conditions, risks, and related issues such as safety equipment and systems, hazard identification, risk evaluation, preventive maintenance completion, etc
  • Monitor and report on safety performance metrics to senior management.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the team, ensuring that projects are executed in accordance with scientific principles and industry best practices.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of project activities, results, and learnings.
