Sr. Battery Scientist
Alsym Energy
Job Title: Senior Battery Scientist
Job Summary:
The Senior Battery Scientist will be responsible for conducting in-depth research on advanced battery chemistries, focusing on the fundamental mechanisms and challenges associated with anode, cathode, and electrolyte materials. This role requires a strong theoretical and experimental background in electrochemistry and materials science. The ideal candidate will be a creative and innovative scientist with a passion for advancing battery technology.
Industry Background: Alsym Energy, Inc is a leading innovator in the rapidly changing field of battery energy storage. It is essential for the world to succeed in the transition to sustainable energy and batteries are at the very core of the solution. In fact, the IEA predicts that 60% of CO2 emission reductions in 2030 will be directly related to batteries. This mission is what drives us every day. Over the last few years, supply-chain constraints and significant safety incidents arising from lithium-ion batteries have reduced confidence in the suitability of the technology. We have developed a revolutionary new chemistry that enables the highest performing non lithium-ion battery in the industry, that is inherently non-flammable, non-toxic, and cost effective.
Responsibilities:
- Chemistry Research:
- Conduct fundamental research on the electrochemical behavior of high-energy battery materials.
- Advanced electrochemical analysis, including cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and galvanostatic cycling.
- Pouch cell assembly and testing, including cycle testing, safety testing, and other performance characterizations (e.g., rate map, voltage stability window, etc.).
- Investigate the reaction mechanisms and degradation pathways of anode, cathode, and electrolyte materials.
- Develop, optimize, and implement characterization techniques and protocols to analyze battery materials and interfaces as a function of operational (e.g., state-of-charge) and environmental (e.g., temperature) parameters.
- Design and implement test protocols to conduct ageing studies and predict long-term performance characteristics.
- Collaborate with a cross-functional team to analyze the data.
- Recommend design of novel electrode and electrolyte materials with improved performance and stability.
- Collaboration & Communication:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including R&D, engineering, and manufacturing.
- Mentor junior scientists and engineers.
- Literature Review & Intellectual Property:
- Stay abreast of the latest advancements in lithium-ion battery technology.
- Conduct thorough literature reviews and identify research opportunities.
- Contribute to the development of intellectual property.
Qualifications:
- Education: Ph.D. in Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience: 10+ years of experience in lithium-ion, sodium-ion or a related battery technology research in an industrial setting, including national laboratories.
- Technical Skills:
- Deep understanding of the fundamentals of battery chemistry.
- Strong working knowledge of battery cyclers (Maccor, Arbin) and potentiostats (Biologic, Gamry).
- Extensive experience with electrochemical analysis and material characterization techniques.
- Proficiency in data analysis and interpretation.
- Experience in battery modeling and simulation tools (e.g., COMSOL, ANSYS) will be a plus.
- Soft Skills:
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong scientific curiosity.
