Job Title: Linux Engineer

Alsym Energy is looking for a self-driven and motivated engineer with a passion for building secure, scalable infrastructure. This position will assume ownership of the Linux infrastructure and helping design OS architecture. The candidate will be responsible for designing, building, and supporting infrastructure hosting HPC applications while adhering to and improving a robust information security program.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the availability, performance, scalability, and security of production systems
  • Low level software compiling from source
  • Working knowledge of packet flows traversing the access layer to network core.
  • Experience with Layer 2 & 3 Switching protocols
  • Utilize automation and monitoring solutions to minimize day-to-day maintenance to optimize system management practices or system performance.
  • Design, install, configure, and maintenance of both desktop and server OS.
  • Ability to present and communicate complex technical concepts from small to medium groups of scientists and engineers.
  • Ensure the secure and effective operation of Linux computing systems by aligning to our infrastructure framework
  • Troubleshoot system problems quickly and effectively.
  • Work with other systems engineers and vendors to resolve hardware and software issues.
  • Install and configure software, both commercial packages and various open-source packages.
  • Maintain documentation/notes on software infrastructure, builds, installs.
  • Off hours support may be required rarely

Basic Qualifications:

  • Assist with helpdesk tasks as needed (new hire provisioning, asset management, MDM, OS, and software troubleshooting).
  • Familiarity working within a change control environment.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science (or related field) and/or 5 years of related experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Experience managing Gitlab.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience managing UNIX/Linux Systems and/or enterprise network technologies
  • A minimum of 2 years of experience utilizing configuration management and automation tools such as Git, Salt, Ansible, or Puppet.
  • Moderate fluency in at least one scripting language such as Bash, Python, or equivalent.
  • Experience performing advanced troubleshooting and systems administration
  • Experience supporting large data systems.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong knowledge of multiple operating systems.
  • Experience with RHEL, Debian, VMware, Cisco, Aruba, Juniper
  • Understanding of HPC platforms to support users with job submissions and troubleshooting.
  • Experience managing systems utilizing GPU/Cuda clusters for HPC
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals including TCP/IP, traffic analysis, common protocols, and network diagnostics.
  • Experience with performance and diagnostic tools for benchmarking, analysis and tuning of systems, networking, and storage.
  • Experience with Grafana, CheckMK, Nagios, WhatsUp, Zabbix, or other network and device monitoring systems.
  • Familiarity with data visualization tools (e.g. Tableau, Prometheus, PowerBI).
  • Some experience with (or desire to learn) Windows and MacOS environments.
  • Ability to work with scientists and engineers to design and implement solutions.
  • Previous experience working in a government, scientific or other highly technical and security-conscience organization
  • Good documentation skills, including ability to log work via ticketing system
