About 1001
1001 builds AI-powered operational intelligence for complex, data-heavy environments. We turn fragmented data into a live, unified model of operations, helping governments and large enterprises make better decisions and solve high-stakes problems.
Our engagements start with forward-deployed teams working inside the customer environment. They use real data, build quickly, and iterate until the system proves itself, then scale it across the organization.
1001 is backed by Lux Capital, General Catalyst, CIV, Hanabi, Sanabil, and 9Yards, with angels including Chris RĂ©, Amjad Masad, Karim Atiyeh, Kareem Amin, and Russell Kaplan.
About the role
Security is part of the product at 1001. Our systems handle sensitive operational data and operate in complex enterprise and government environments. The quality of our security can determine whether a deployment moves forward.
As our first dedicated security hire, you will establish and lead security across the company. This is a hands-on individual-contributor leadership role. You will set priorities, build practical controls, lead important security work, and help teams make sound decisions as 1001 grows.
You will join at a greenfield stage, balancing immediate risks with the foundations 1001 will need over time. You will work closely with engineering, deployment, customers, and company leadership, with significant freedom to shape how security is approached.
What you will work on
- Establish a clear, risk-based security strategy and roadmap for 1001.
- Partner with engineering to build secure defaults into our products, infrastructure, and deployment practices.
- Shape the security approach for customer environments with demanding operational, data, and residency requirements.
- Develop practical safeguards for AI-enabled systems and the data and actions around them.
- Strengthen company-wide security practices as the team and business grow.
- Build effective detection, incident response, vulnerability management, and recovery capabilities.
- Lead customer security reviews and assurance work with enterprise and government stakeholders.
- Work with specialist partners where useful and help shape the future security function.
Requirements
- At least 6 years of security engineering experience, including meaningful ownership of product, cloud, platform, or identity security.
- A track record of building a material security capability from an immature or greenfield state.
- Strong security engineering fundamentals and the ability to turn them into working controls.
- The ability to work hands-on with code, infrastructure, or security automation.
- Experience securing complex systems that handle sensitive data and privileged access.
- Experience leading security incidents and turning findings into preventative engineering work.
- Sound judgment about material risk, delivery trade-offs, and what to prioritize when time and resources are limited.
- Clear communication with engineers, executives, customers, and external stakeholders.
- The ability to apply security fundamentals to AI-enabled products and emerging technical risks.
Nice to have
- Experience as an early or first security hire.
- Experience with government, critical infrastructure, or highly regulated enterprise customers.
- Experience with customer-hosted, sovereign, or otherwise constrained deployment environments.
- Experience leading security assurance or compliance programs.
Working at 1001
We take on high-stakes problems in environments where mistakes have real consequences. This requires a high bar, real speed, and systems that hold up under live operations. The people who thrive here own outcomes from start to finish, bring rigor to their work, and help raise the standard for everyone around them.
